A MAN who created four vaccines to fight cervical cancer has been awarded the Prime Minister's Prize for Science.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd presented the annual $300,000 award to Queensland's Professor Ian Frazer at a Federal Parliament ceremony last night.

Prof Frazer is director of the University of Queensland's Diamantina Institute for Cancer, Immunology and Metabolic Medicine and a former Australian of the Year.

In other awards, bioscientist Dr Carola Vinuesa of Canberra won the $50,000 Science Minister's Prize for Life Scientist of the Year.
