THERE is a science to how the surf works and understanding it could save your life, an expert said.

Dr Rob Brander is an Australian oceanographer who has dedicated his life to researching the forces that lurk beneath our coastline.

He will present the beach safety program Science of the Surf at Dixon Park Surf Life Saving Club on January 6, and said the key to surf survival was in reading conditions.

"Most Australians do not know what a rip is and can't spot one. Understanding beaches and surf is critical for all Australians," he said.

Dr Brander said a person drowns in a rip every two to three days in Australia during summer months.

The free program from 11am explains rip formation, identification and survival, and explains wave formation.

It is part of Newcastle City Council's Coastcare Summer Festival that promotes beach safety.
