IT was hands-on fun at the 2008 Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge at Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium yesterday.

Year 9 and 10 students from Hunter schools pitted their intelligence against each other, to complete a series of challenges involving concepts of science, engineering and physics.

Sophie Seymour, from Swansea High, and winning team in the "Electracity Challenge" where entrants had to power a city taking into account several criteria, said the day was important for students.

Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge co-ordinating committee chairman Brian Atkins said the competition was designed to get students to study maths, science and physics for their HSC.

The 2008 Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge runs every day this week, ending on Friday.
