Top year 12 science student Laura Fitzgerald is passionate about the subject, but it hasn't always been the case. Laura's aptitude for science didn't flourish until she reached year 9 at St Vincent's College, Potts Point.
Science Week - one of the school's early initiatives - spurred her interest, as did the school's hands-on approach to the subject matter. It has eight dedicated teachers and five new labs laying the foundation for a school-wide passion for the study of science."It was a surprise," she admits. "I never thought I was any good at it. The teachers made it seem really interesting and a lot of fun."Bucking another trend, the 17-year-old is also a keen maths student, coming third in her class. "I love maths but I didn't pick it up until about year 8." Laura, who averages second and fourth place in physics and chemistry, recently competed in the annual national youth forum, the National Science Titration, at the University of NSW, for which she trained in year 11. Her class group came third in the state. She's aims to study medicine or medical science at UNSW when she leaves St Vincent's at the end of the year.
