There is strong demand in Newcastle in four areas of study science nursing, teaching and the arts.

MID-YEAR enrolments at the University of

Newcastle identify strong demand in four

particular areas of study.

Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of

Nursing, and the combined Bachelor of Teaching/

Bachelor of Arts have attracted the highest level of

enrolments.

The University of Newcastle released 1106 offers

on June 30.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Services) Dr Sue Gould

said the universitys mid-year enrolments had the

second largest number of offers in NSW.

The University of Newcastle continues to be the

university of first choice for students living locally

and in the Central Coast and Mid-North Coast

areas, Dr Gould said.

Our teaching and learning environment leads

the higher education sector in many areas and our

research performance consistently places Newcastle

in the top 10 universities in Australia.

The University of Newcastle has developed a strong

reputation with employment rates and starting salaries

for graduates above than the national average.

The 2007 Australian Graduate Survey showed that

82 per cent of the University of Newcastles bachelor

degree graduates aged under 25 typically found

employment within four months of completing their

degree.

In the fields of building, civil engineering,

mechanical engineering and mathematics,

100 per cent of graduates gained full-time

employment within four months of completing

their degree.

The University of Newcastle has some of the

highest graduate starting salaries in Australia, with

the median annual starting salary at $43,500 for

bachelor degree graduates aged under 25.

Demand for graduates of the University of

Newcastle led to a 20 per cent increase in the

number of organisations registering to attend the

universitys annual Careers and Employers Expo in

April.

Melissa Moore, of the Universitys Career Service,

said Newcastle had been nationally recognised for

producing work-ready graduates.

In particular there has been a jump in demand

for our engineering graduates, with 105 employers

specifically wanting to meet these students, Ms

Moore said.

This is testament to the quality of the universitys

engineering degree and our efforts to tackle

Australias skill shortage in this area.

University of Newcastle information days will

be held at the Newcastle campus on August 30,

Central Coast campus on August 23 and Port

Macquarie campus on September 4.
