There is strong demand in Newcastle in four areas of study science nursing, teaching and the arts.
MID-YEAR enrolments at the University ofNewcastle identify strong demand in fourparticular areas of study.Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor ofNursing, and the combined Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts have attracted the highest level ofenrolments.The University of Newcastle released 1106 offerson June 30.Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Services) Dr Sue Gouldsaid the universitys mid-year enrolments had thesecond largest number of offers in NSW.The University of Newcastle continues to be theuniversity of first choice for students living locallyand in the Central Coast and Mid-North Coastareas, Dr Gould said.Our teaching and learning environment leadsthe higher education sector in many areas and ourresearch performance consistently places Newcastlein the top 10 universities in Australia.The University of Newcastle has developed a strongreputation with employment rates and starting salariesfor graduates above than the national average.The 2007 Australian Graduate Survey showed that82 per cent of the University of Newcastles bachelordegree graduates aged under 25 typically foundemployment within four months of completing theirdegree.In the fields of building, civil engineering,mechanical engineering and mathematics,100 per cent of graduates gained full-timeemployment within four months of completingtheir degree.The University of Newcastle has some of thehighest graduate starting salaries in Australia, withthe median annual starting salary at $43,500 forbachelor degree graduates aged under 25.Demand for graduates of the University ofNewcastle led to a 20 per cent increase in thenumber of organisations registering to attend theuniversitys annual Careers and Employers Expo inApril.Melissa Moore, of the Universitys Career Service,said Newcastle had been nationally recognised forproducing work-ready graduates.In particular there has been a jump in demandfor our engineering graduates, with 105 employersspecifically wanting to meet these students, MsMoore said.This is testament to the quality of the universitysengineering degree and our efforts to tackleAustralias skill shortage in this area.University of Newcastle information days willbe held at the Newcastle campus on August 30,Central Coast campus on August 23 and PortMacquarie campus on September 4.
