The Government is offering incentives for people to train and work as science
and maths teachers.QUALIFIED teachers with approval to teachfrom the NSW Department of Educationand Training can consider a career changewithout leaving the profession.Retraining recognises existing qualifications, skillsand experience to allow work in other teachingareas.Opportunities are available in a variety ofcurriculum areas including technology, mathematics,science and vocational education.They are also available in specialist teaching areasincluding special education, school counselling,careers advising, teacher-librarianship, English as asecond language and reading recovery tutoring.Retraining provides the opportunity to acquirenew knowledge and teaching skills, developconfidence as a teacher, and broaden careeradvancement opportunities.Retraining programs are rigorous tertiaryprograms that are delivered by universities andTAFE Institutes.Delivery is usually through full-time face-to-faceor part-time distance modes.The period of training for full-time programsvaries from six to 12 months.Apart from a tertiary training component,retraining programs include a number of supportfeatures such as an orientation and school-basedmentoring support.Teachers are appointed to a school in an area ofstaffing need on completion of retraining.
