While attention has been focused on the exploits of our athletes in Beijing, some other young Australians have been performing commendable feats in the 2008 International Science Olympiads.
Australia's team of 13 finished with a medal tally of two gold, six silver and three bronze.The Australian team at the International Biology Olympiads in Mumbai, India, won two gold and two silver medals. Two NSW students - Ruby Kwong and Jonathan Marwick - won gold, while Victorians David Leitinger and Keshinie Rasaratnam both brought home silver medals. The Australian team at the International Chemistry Olympiads in Hungary, Budapest, brought home three silver and one bronze medal.Western Australia's Daren Tan earned a silver medal as did Mingyue Kardashinsky and Yufeng Shi, both from NSW. Another NSW student, William Jackson, won a bronze medal.The International Physics Olympiads were held in Hanoi, Vietnam, and the Australian team scored one silver and three bronze medals, with Queensland's Jake Glidden winning the silver, and Rocky Yip (QLD), John Biun (VIC) and Jowa Chan (NSW) collecting bronze."Our Science Olympians are the future of scientific research and development in Australia, and their success against the best in the world shows that our up-and-coming scientists have world-class potential," says Chris Stewart of Australian Science Innovations.
